2017 European Car of the Year candidates revealed

Alfa Romeo Giulia

Seven new models are in contention for the coveted award; winner to be announced next March

The Alfa Romeo Giulia and new Mercedes-Benz E-Class are two of seven candidates up for the 2017 European Car of the Year award.

The Giulia, a new Italian BMW 3 Series rival, is a sure favourite for this year’s crown, with the new E-Class and its lengthy list of technical advancements posing one of the biggest threats.

They’re joined in the running by the quirky new Citroën C3, the striking new Nissan Micra, Peugeot’s new 3008 SUV and Toyota’s angular C-HR crossover.

The final slot goes to the smart-looking Volvo S90 and its estate sibling, the V90.

Last year’s winner was the Vauxhall Astra, and the victor the year before was the Volkswagen Passat.

Autocar’s own Matt Prior will be on the judging panel, with the final decision on the 2017 winner being announced on the eve of the Geneva motor show on 6 March 2017.
