We all tend to take the reliability of modern cars for granted. Regular servicing however is vital in order to maintain not only efficiency in terms of performance and fuel consumption, but also to help prevent excessive wear on vital (and possibly expensive!) components.
Having your car serviced at the recommended intervals will also help guard against the stress and inconvenience of a breakdown.
A properly maintained car will be less likely to give you an unpleasant surprise when the MOT test is due, and a full service history can significantly enhance the second hand value of your car. Here at CVS, we have two fully equipped Car Service Centres with experienced, fully trained staff, capable of carrying out repairs on up to six vehicles simultaneously.
We have invested in the latest electronic diagnostic equipment to ensure that any problems with high technology engine management systems on the latest cars can be speedily resolved. We also have an electronic database with full details of the manufacturer’s schedules for car servicing for over 20,000 different models!

The facts about your MOT
All vehicles on the road must be kept in a roadworthy condition and every vehicle over three years old must have an MOT certificate.
The MOT test checks that vehicles meet road safety and environmental standards. The first MOT test for a vehicle is required when it turns three years old.
The MOT certificate confirms that, at the time of the test, without dismantling it, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law.
The MOT looks at:
• Body and vehicle structure
Must be free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas and there are no sharp edges likely to cause injury
• Fuel system
Has no leaks and the fuel cap fastens and seals securely. The fuel cap needs to be opened, so be sure the key is available
• Exhaust emissions
Need to meet requirements. This is dependent on age and fuel type
• Exhaust system
Is secure and complete, without serious leaks, plus it silences effectively
• Seat belts
Must be checked for type, condition, operation and security. All compulsory seat belts to be in place
The front seats are secure. Front and rear seats can be secured in the upright position
To latch securely in the closed position. Front doors should open from inside and outside of vehicle. Rear doors may need to be opened to gain access to testable items
The minimum number are on the vehicle and they are in good condition and fitted securely
• Load security
Boot and tailgate can be secured in the closed position
Condition, operation and performance. Note the removal of the road wheel is part of test
Vehicle Diagnostics across all manufacturers
CVS specialise in vehicle diagnostics, we can identify a multitude of faults across all makes and models of vehicle. Our trained mechanics can diagnose running faults and mechanical problems using diagnostic instruments designed to communicate with your vehicles on-board computer.
Modern cars use a host of computerised controls and sensors to perform electrical and electromechanical functions and each vehicle has its connection protocol. For this reason we use a broad range of diagnostic systems enabling us to diagnose electronic and mechanical faults across all makes and models of car and van.
We attach these systems to the vehicles diagnostic ports allowing us to access the trouble codes, helping us quickly identify any problems with engine components or other systems such as the ABS, Air Bags or Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems.
Most modern vehicles have warning lights which offer motorist insight into the nature of the problem, which in the majority of cases is straightforward to identify what is potentially causing the issue.
When the problem is mechanical, say an issue with any component not linked to the engine’s onboard computer we use diagnostic systems in conjunction with “traditional” troubleshooting methods to diagnose the problem.
Commonly diagnostic faults include:
ABS (anti-lock braking system)
TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system)
SRS (supplemental restraint system)

Correct wheel alignment simply refers to the measuring and adjusting of your wheels and suspension to ensure that they all point in the right direction.
Even a small discrepancy in wheel alignment can mean that for every mile you drive in a straight line, one or more of your tyres will be “scrubbed” sideways by a couple of metres. This soon adds up to a lot of unnecessary tyre wear, and can affect the safe handling of your vehicle.
It is important to get your wheel alignment checked regularly, as it can be affected by everyday driving such as a pothole in the road. It may well be out of alignment even before you notice some of the tell-tale signs such as the vehicle “pulling “ to one side.

The critical areas of a combustion engine be it petrol or diesel are controlled by either a timing belt or timing chain. The job of either a belt or chain is to drive and maintain the camshafts and crankshafts in synchronisation.
In the event of a failure of either of these items excessive engine damage may occur, resulting in high labour costs to resolve the issue and in some cases extensive engine repair or even replacement.
With timing belts all vehicle manufacturers have a specified age or mileage for changing your belt to avoid potential breakdowns or high costs. The age or mileage limit is usually displayed in your owners handbook, alternatively if the book is unavailable please contact a member or our team by phone or via our contact form and we’ll provide all the information and costing you’ll require using your vehicle registration number. Within this quote we may also include a price for recommended replacements along with the timing belt, Items such as water pumps (that are also driven by the belt), or your alternator drive belt. We do this to avoid a potential failure in the future and keep repeat labour costs to a minimum.
Timing chains are now the preferred method for manufacturers. Luckily with chains you will receive a warning that there’s an issue, this will be either a fault light on the dash related to engine management or the chain becomes very noisy, a metallic rattle especially from cold starting is the first sign of any potential issues. Again, a member or our team will be able to advise you of any repair or replacement and the costs involved. Included in your quote are all the required replacement parts including guides and tensioners required to keep the chain in correct working order. Some vehicles suffer from a stretched chain scenario which can be caused by oil starvation, we can help with this with our revolutionary EDT engine deep clean service.
The right tools for the job
We only use original manufacturer or equivalent replacement parts. If we do not have the right tool for your vehicle, we will not replace, or quote for replacing, the timing belt. Using incorrect tools can cause extensive engine damage or problems with your engines performance, leading to the new timing belt breaking sooner than it should. Always ensure your repairer has the correct setting tools for your vehicle before authorising any work to be carried out.
Don’t leave changing your timing belt until it’s too late. We replace belts for all makes and models at very competitive rates. Call 0191 4174151.
It’s easy to take them for granted for as long as you know you can stop safely, but many of the parts of your braking system wear out over time, thanks to the tremendous forces exerted on them by being called on to help stop a few tons of metal – and its contents – in good time to avoid any mishaps. When you think of it in those terms, you start to realise how important it is to have any car brakes repairs carried out promptly, so that what might start out as a minor inconvenience doesn’t end up putting you in real danger.
We have a stock of brake pads and discs on site and fit high quality parts from manufacturers such as Brembo and Bosch. We can ensure a prompt and affordable service and we can provide a recovery service if your vehicle is unsafe to drive to our workshop.
